= 0,55). A Escala de Comportamento Ambiental no Local de Trabalho resultou no índice "comportamento ambiental no trabalho" (CAT; ? = 0,76). As variáveis situacionais (instituições e setores) influenciaram diferentemente atitudes e comportamentos ambientais dos servidores. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In Brazil, the preservation of the environment is regulated by laws. The environmental policies are executed by many different public institutions. The main objective of this research is to make a comparative study of federal level public institutions staff analyzing environmental attitudes and behaviors between staff from environmental institutions (EI) and nonenvironmental institutions (NEI). The theoretical assumptions of the research were based on concepts from the Environmental and Social Psychology'. An on-line questionnaire was sent to internal e-mail network. It was considered as valid the answers of 760 participants, being 28% from EI and 72% from NEI. The Environmental Attitude Scale resulted in the indicator named "ecocentric beliefs" (EB; a = 0,55). The Environmental Behavior Scale in the Workplace resulted in the indicator "environmental behavior in the workplace" (EBW, a = 0,76). The Environmental Behavior Scale out of the Workplace resulted in three different indicators: "accurate waste disposal" (a = 0,70); "recycling" (a = 0,76) and "water and energy savings" (a = 0,69), The results of the present research reveal that EB value for EI staff is smaller than the ones for NEI staff. It was not identified significant statistic difference between the institutions, concerning the EBW", probably due to the existence of environmental management programs. A positive correlation was detected, although weak, between EB and EBW', and also between EB and accurate waste disposal's behavior. The variables of situation notably institutions and sectors reduce differently environmental attitudes and behaviors of the staff.
