Previous issue date: 2008 / Resumo: Este trabalho discute a concepção de história genealógica de Michel Foucault e examina a sua prática em Vigiar e Punir. Procura entender como a genealogia está diretamente relacionada ao modo como ele entende o poder, isto é, a partir de relações de forças que não param de se movimentar e de se enfrentar em uma batalha constante. Privilegia a luta entre o poder do soberano e a ¿multidão¿ no Antigo Regime, o conflito entre os três modos de punição que concorrem no final do século XVIII, e o embate entre o sistema carcerário e o grupo fourierista La Phalange / Abstract: This paper discusses Michel Foucault¿s conception of genealogical history, and examines his practice in Discipline and Punish. It tries to understand how genealogy is directly related to how he understands the power, that is, from the relation of powers which do not stop moving and facing each other in a constant battle. It favors the combat between the sovereign¿s power and the ¿crowd¿ in the Ancien Régime, the conflict among the three ways to punish which compete at the end of the 18th century, and the collision between the penitentiary system and the fourierist group La Phalange / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História
