This study aims to determine how scientific writing is targeted in five Swedish textbooks for the course Swedish 1. The main goal of the study is to determine where scientific writing is placed in the books, what knowledge the textbooks convey about scientific writing and how scientific writing is being trained in the exercises presented in the textbooks. Furthermore, the thesis aims to clarify possible differences and similarities in how different textbooks target scientific writing. The result show that the management of scientific writing is similar between the textbooks. The results of the study display that scientific writing is often placed in the beginning or the middle of the textbooks. Additionally, the study show that every textbook encourages students to read to source text with caution and to refer to the source. In conclusion, the study suggests that the exercises presented in the textbooks are foremost about writing a shorter conclusion of a longer text.
