Muslimska främlingar : En enkätstudie av gymnasieelevers uppfattningar av islam / Muslim strangers : A study of students on upper-secondary school perceptions of Islam

ABSTRACT   This Bachelor essay is about students on upper-secondary school perceptions of Islam by the media and the education in schools. The purpose of this Bachelor thesis is to therefore to examine students on upper-secondary school perceptios of Islam and if the education in school and the media report influences their private opinions and attitudes. The research questions for my thesis are the following: How is Islam perceived in the education in school by the students in upper-secondary school? How is Islam percieved in the media report by the students in upper-secondary school? What can be said by the students in upper-secondary school private opinions in relations to media and the education in school? My research includes qualitative studies of literature and by the students survey responses that is presented in the research. The research has also consisted of quantitative studies as the research questions requires some measurable results. The survey questions in the research is connected to the education in school, the media and the students own opinion. The main theory that I have chosen for this thesis is Anthony Giddens and Philip W. Sutton´s theory about ”The process of socialization”. The subject i researched in shows that the students perceive the school as something positive despite the fact that the men in question perceive the school as more negative than the women. Media has temendous impact on people´s thoughts and feelings, affecting students perceptions of Islam. The media are guided by people´s need for interesting news. The perceptions of the students are influenced by the education in school and the media, but the survey shows that much else also plays a part in the process of socialization. The results of the research have also shown that this study has the same patterns as has been demonstrated in several other studies. Previous studies and my survey show that people have relatively negative perceptions of Islam and that it is seen as something new where Sweden has a responibility to solve.
