Cette thèse présente une étude sur l’historiographie brésilienne dans un moment singulier et important pour la définition de la discipline “histoire” au Brésil. Son thème général sont les formes possibles de conscience historique pendant les premières décades du XXeme siècle, perçues par le genre d’essai historique produit à l’époque, tandis que son sujet particulier est le livre de Gilberto Freyre, Maîtres et esclaves. À partir de l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’oeuvre rassemble les principales tensions qui ont caracterisé le savoir historique dans ce contexte-là, en definissant les conditions fondamentales pour l’émergence de “l’histoire professionelle” tel que celle pratiquée dans les cadres des universités brésiliennes depuis la moitié du siècle, l’ênquete a étudié la thématique de la réprésentation du passé produite par Freyre dans le livre, au même temps que les formes de légitimation dont il s’est servi dans le sens de valider son registre historique. De cette manière, à partir d’une lecture d’autre chef-d’oeuvre, Hautes terres, de Euclides da Cunha, il est défendue la place originale occupée par l’auteur dans la tradition de l’essaysme nacionale, ainsi comme la singularité qui a definit son style d’écriture de l’histoire. / Esta tese apresenta um estudo sobre a historiografia brasileira em um momento singular e importante para a definição da disciplina da história no Brasil. Ela tem por assunto geral as formas possíveis de consciência histórica durante as primeiras décadas do século XX, explicitadas pelo gênero de ensaio histórico então produzido, e tem como seu objeto particular o conhecido livro de Gilberto Freyre, Casa-grande & senzala. Partindo da hipótese de que tal obra condensa as principais tensões que marcaram o saber histórico para aquele contexto, definindo as condições fundamentais para a emergência da “história profissional” tal como a praticada no âmbito das universidades brasileiras desde meados daquele século no país, a pesquisa voltou-se para a temática da representação do passado produzida por Freyre no livro, bem como para as formas de legitimação por ele utilizadas no sentido de validar seu registro histórico. Dessa maneira, estudando-o a partir de outra obra-mestra como Os sertões, de Euclides da Cunha, defende-se o lugar original ocupado pelo autor dentro da tradição ensaística nacional, assim como a singularidade que marca seu estilo de escrita da história. / This thesis presents a study on brazilian historiography, at an important moment for the definition of the discipline history on Brazil. Its general matter are the possible forms of historical consciousness during the first decades of the XXth century, evidenced by the sort of historical essay then produced, while its particular subject is the all known Gilberto Freyre’s book, The master and the slaves. According to the hypothesis that it concentrates the main tensions which have characterized the historical knowledge in that context, defining the basic conditions for the emergence of the “professional history” such as those produced at the universities since the half of the century, the research have turned over to the topic of the representation of the past established by Freyre in the book, as well as over the forms of legitimation utilized on the purpose to validate his historical record. Studying it from another masterpiece like Euclides da Cunha’s Rebellion in the backlands, it is sustained the place unique occupied by that author in the intellectual tradition of Brazil, just as the singularity that define his style of historical writting.
