__________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The contamination waste of the health services constitutes an average of 1 to 3% of the total solid urban waste (DF, 2003).The concern with its management is based on the risks of transmission of diseases and environmental contamination when improperly handled. The objective of the study was to analyze the management of the health service residue and the management of potentially infectious and perforating and cutting material in Children, Adult and Emergency Units of public hospitals in the Federal District. This is a descriptive study, conducted in five hospitals of the Department of Health of the Federal District. Information was analyzed regarding the management and handling of the health service residue by cleaning professional, based on organizational aspects, technical-operational and human resources. Data for systematic observation in hospitals were compiled and analyzed in the Access of software SPSS version 12.0. The research was approved by the Committee for Ethics in opinion number 0 87/2006. The results showed that the hospitals of the Department of Health of the Federal District did not segregate the waste from group A, while those in group E were segregated and packed according to current legislation. Of the 624 cleaning professional interviewed, 22.9% suffered an accident with perforation and cutting material and 84% did not record the accident. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously evaluate the management of these services with the purpose of reducing the overall volume of hospital waste, minimize the risks of transmission of diseases to cleaning staff and reduce the impact of waste on the environment.
