Previous issue date: 2014 / Abstract : The present paper deals with pilgrimage that takes place in Bahia's hinterland, specifically in the southwest of the state, in the city of Maracás. The perspective from the pilgrimage leaders - important individuals in its realization - constituted its central focus. Through their stories, we sought for an understanding about the practices and the reasons that take pilgrims to peregrinate, at the same time that we understand how the pilgrimage leaders build themselves as they are. The paper approaches the others pilgrim?s perspective who are not leaders, mainly in the last chapter, in which one can notice the diversity of motivations shared by the pilgrims to go on a pilgrimage every year. The reasons presented are only exemplificative but exhaustive such as: paying promises, socializing, curiosity, duty, tradition, knowledge, etc. Most of these motivations have already been approached in previous works, but in a different way. While some of the pilgrimage practices are dealt as secular, in a sense that they are not in the holy setting, here we opted to deal with them as a whole while inherent to religiosity. Bearing in mind the auto-attribution of the interlocutors from the ethnographic field, the present research proposes an alternative to the understanding of pilgrimage as a multisemantic phenomenon, multifaceted in constant transformation, even being based on what is called tradition, for one does not excluded the other.
