Apical root resorption (EARR) is a condition commonly observed during orthodontic treatment. Root resorption related to orthodontic treatment is part of the biological cost of therapy, and it is clinically acceptable. There are local and technical factors that allow the predictability of the occurrence of root resorption during orthodontic planning for each case. These factors include: root morphology, morphology of the alveolar bone crest, type and duration of treatment, type of force used and other factors inherent to treatment. The objective of this study was to determine, by means of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), the distances between the root apex and the buccal and lingual cortical bone and the axial inclination of the upper incisors with and without resorption in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. The sample consisted of 21 orthodontic patients treated with edgewise appliance. Patients underwent CBCT and images were analyzed with the i-CAT Vision software. The results showed that upper incisors with EARR showed a significantly shorter distance from root apex to lingual cortical bone than did the upper incisors without EARR. Upper incisors with EARR presented higher angulation between the long axis of the tooth and the palatal plane when compared to incisors without EARR.
