This work seeks to document the construction path of this center, its possibilities and impossibilities; to identify which aspects of the Casa d’Engenho are really different from a so called traditional practice.
The study was concentrated on the trajectory of the Centro Psiquiátrico Pedro II (Pedro II Psychiatric Center), on the period between 1982 and 1996. It was when changes on the speeches and institutional practices occurred, allowing the raising of new models of care in mental health. In the early 90’s a more radical process of transformation of the old asylum model took place, with the birth of new centers, as the Casa d’Engenho, that had as proposition the demolish of this asylum culture.
The birth of psychiatry as a discipline model was demarcate from the work of Michel Foucault and other authors on the history of madness.
The final argument on the clinic practiced on the daily care centers has the contribution of authors as Jurandir Freire Costa, Jairo Goldberg and the production of Felix Guattari and Gilles Deleuze, amplifying and articulating the argument concerning madness and the social and political environment.
