An optimization of the production at Scania is not only affected by the production flow but also by tool performance. More than 90 percent of tools used in production at Scania are custom-made, and they make up the third largest area of expenditure. Scania continuously replace custom-made tools with new improved tools to increase their life expectancy, reduce tied-up capital, improve quality and/or reduce lead times. Today, this process is not standardised. Furthermore, it is highly dependent on relationships with suppliers and is perceived to be time consuming. The purpose of this thesis project is to investigate the information flows at various production units within Scania and, on the basis of these, to provide Scania with information on how to standardise the implementation of new custom-made tools and how to improve cooperation with suppliers. A more transparent flow of information and an improved cooperation with suppliers are predicted to generate cost and time savings. To streamline the workflow a project model was created. This contained five steps: literature study, interviews regarding the current situation, identification of problem areas, data analysis and proposals for improvement. Our analysis showed that the transition to new tools is handled in very different ways in the various units at Scanias engine department. Problems regarding who should carry through the work, how tools should be tested, how administration and documentation should be handled, and which role suppliers have were identified. The data analysis showed that internal activities can be ineffective and sometimes tie up capital. Furthermore, it appeared that suppliers of custom-made tools hold a wide range of lead times, service levels and delivery dependability. We propose a method for implementing new tools which would eliminate the identified problems. The method is clarifying which activities should be undertaken and in what order, and delineating responsibilities for carrying them out. It also increase efficiency and motivation for managing improvements. The method focuses on prioritising between projects and minimising the number of active projects with aim to reduce the lead time for the implementation process. Our work underlies the importance of documentation with purpose to enable measurable work of improvement. Furthermore, the method suggests better cooperation and explicit requirements for the suppliers to further standardise the work. The main purpose of the thesis is to standardise in order to reduce lead times of the implementation process and thereby generate cost savings.
