This project has investigated Karlheinz Stockhausen's compositions STOP and Adieu from a primarily analytical perspective. Because the notational paradigms dictate an experimental attitude, the project has been approached in this manner. The resulting analyses have provided information concerning the pitch materials utilized and the formal constructions of these two compositions. The results obtained from the analyses were subsequently applied in performance practice. These performances of STOP and Adieu were compared with the expectations predicated by the compositions and a determination was made as to their relative successfulness. / School of Music
