The need for second language learning is increasing in today’s multicultural and globalized society, and adult studies are becoming more common. Teachers must encourage all students, and all schools need to promote equality. Motivation is one of the most important factors for positive learning and progress, and it can be helpful for second language teachers to know more about this subject. The aim of this study was to examine which motivational factors that influence adult immigrants to learn Swedish through SFI education in Sweden. The importance of different motivational factors in studying was examined. Results were produced through a combined method of a survey among 44 SFI students, and interviews with six of these students. A future job was the factor that had the greatest impact on the informants’ motivation to study SFI. Also the ability to help their children with school work was essential to them. It is important to know Swedish in Sweden and that contributes to the desired independence. Meaningfulness, future goals and positive expectations are important for motivation. The study cannot be generalized to a larger population, but it can say something about the diversity in today’s schools. Further studies are proposed in the conclusion.
