One of our reasons is that we think the subject usability is interesting, is that we think it is an important. Usability is maybe the most important element when you develop or choose a system because it can save money for the companies and give the users a more delightful and better work environment. The aim of the investigation is to find out if the implementation of a web portal is a direction to reach higher usability in a complex system that consists of several different interacting applications. The objective of our investigation is to show if the implementation of a web portal is a direction to reach higher usability in a complex system that consists of several different interacting applications. In our case we will try to see if Karlshamns AB:s recently implemented web portal is more useful than their previous application (Movex with interacting programs) One thought with the report is to give the system developers a perspective of how the usability can be in-house made applications versus standard applications. Also companies that not have any computer- or department for development and which are thinking of get hold of, change, replace or complement their system and applications, may have some interest in our thesis. We have used a qualitative investigation method in our study to answer our hypothesis. We have interviewed and done empirical studies with concerned personnel. While the empirical studies we supervised the users when they used the actual system. To answer our hypothesis we used six questions, which we come up with after our studies of the literature. When we have analysed the result from chapter five the conclusion was that our six questions could be answered in favour of the web portal. • Has the web portal lower degree of complexity than Movex? • Is it easier to learn the web portal than Movex? • Is it easier for the user to remember how the web portal works over the time than Movex? • Does the web portal do what it is supposed to do? • Is the web portal more satisfying to use than Movex? • Is the web portal more adapted for its usage context than Movex? The conclusion in our case is that the hypothesis is verified “With lower complexity in a system the usability will get higher”. / En av anledningarna till att vi tycker ämnet användbarhet är intressant, är att vi anser detta vara en viktig, om inte en av de viktigaste beståndsdelarna vid utveckling eller val av system, då det kan spara pengar åt företagen och ge användarna en behagligare och bättre arbetsmiljö. Undersökningens syfte är att utröna ifall införandet av en webbportal är ett sätt att nå ökad användbarhet i ett komplext system, som består av flera olika samverkande applikationer. Målet med vår undersökning är att visa om införandet av en webbportal är ett sätt att nå ökad användbarhet i ett komplext system, som består av flera olika samverkande applikationer. I vårt fall skall vi komma fram till om Karlshamns AB:s nyligen implementerade webbportal, som de använder för produktionsrapportering, är mer användbar än deras föregående applikation (Movex med dess produktionsrapporteringsfunktion och samverkande program). En tanke med rapporten är att ge systemutvecklare ett perspektiv på hur användbarheten kan vara i egenutvecklade applikationer gentemot standardapplikationer. Även företag som inte har någon egen data- eller utvecklingsavdelning och som överväger att införskaffa, byta, ersätta eller komplettera sina system och applikationer, kan ha intresse av att ta del av vår studie. I vårt arbete har vi använt oss av en kvalitativ undersökning för att besvara vår hypotes. I undersökningen har vi intervjuat berörda personer och även genomfört empiriska studier på desamma. Under de empiriska studierna övervakade vi användarnas användning av de aktuella systemen. För att besvara vår hypotes tog vi hjälp av sex underfrågor, vilka kommit fram efter litteraturstudier. Efter genomförd analys av resultatet, från genomförandet, såg vi att samtliga underfrågor kunde besvaras till webbportalens fördel. • Har webbportalen lägre grad av komplexitet jämfört med Movex? • Är webbportalen enklare att lära sig än Movex? • Kan användaren enklare, över tiden, komma ihåg hur webbportalen fungerar i förhållande till Movex? • Gör webbportalen vad som är avsett med den? • Är webbportalen mer tillfredsställande för användaren att använda gentemot Movex? • Är webbportalen mer anpassad till sitt användningssammanhang än Movex? Slutsatsen av vår fallstudie blir därmed att hypotesen satisfieras, ”Med minskad komplexitet får ett system ökad användbarhet”.
