inerentes a açucarocracia pernambucana são evidenciadas de forma comparativa. A
partir disso, relaciona-se diretamente o impacto das diferenças econômicas no
comportamento da classe senhorial pernambucana no que concerne à escravidão e ao processo de modernização dos engenhos. Estes dois processos refletem claramente a importância das diferenças de mentalidade na formação histórica da identidade coletiva em torno da figura do senhor de engenho nordestino. Pensar a história do açúcar em Pernambuco sobre essa perspectiva comparativa permite enxergar com mais clareza as razões pelas quais a classe senhorial local sofreu um processo forte de refinamento ao final do período imperial.
________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The central objective in this master’s thesis is to analyze the heterogeneity of the pernambucana sugar elite during the last decades of the imperial period. The inherent
distinctions of the açucarocracia pernambucana are evidenced in a comparative way. Therefore, the impact of the economic differences in the behavior of the pernambucana senhorial class in relation to the slavery and the process of modernization of the productive device became related directly. Clearly, these two processes reflect the importance of the mentality differences for the historical formation of the collective identity around the picture of the senhor de engenho nordestino. Understanding the Pernambuco sugar’s history, using a comparative vision, it is possible to see clear reasons to changes in the local senhorial class, in such away that it lived a strong refinement process during the end of the imperial period.
