Skolverket the managing authority of the Swedish schools published the 25 of September 2019 suggested syllabus changes from the 2011 syllabus. One of the changes concerning the subject of history was that the aim “ancient civilizations, from prehistoric times to about 1700”1 no longer remained in the syllabus for primary school. This started a brief and intense critic storm in the media. People from the history field, teachers, and the general public reacted mostly negatively towards the proposal. This essay aims to interpret and analyze the arguments for and against the proposal in the newspapers Svenska Dagbladet, Dagens Nyheter, Aftonbladet, Expressen, and Läraren. The interpretation and analysis are done with an argumentation analysis method, with the three history didactics perspectives, history consciousness, use of history, and view of history. The different newspapers generally had a familiar picture concerning the proposal. Arguments followed the theoretical angles chosen for the essay and many argued that the time given the subject of history was not sufficient.
