Should Turkey become a member of the EU? This is one of the most controversial
issues in German European politics now. While the Social Democrats and the
Green Party seem to be in favour, the Christian Democrats strongly oppose it.<br>
This paper demonstrates that both sides - their contrary political preferences
notwithstanding- share one central belief: Turkey does not fit into the EU for
cultural reasons. Through a close reading of parliamentary debates on EUenlargement
the article reconstructs how Turkey is made Europe’s other.
