Emotionernas betydelse i förändringsarbete med män som utövar våld : En kvalitativ studie av socialarbetares erfarenheter av att arbeta med våldsutövande män / The importance of emotion in treatment work with male perpetrators : A qualitative study with social workers' experiences with treatment work with male perpetrators

This study aimed to investigate social workers' experiences in working with the therapy of male perpetrators, both in non-compulsory and court-ordered treatment. In order to answer the purpose and questions raised in the study, six semi-structured interviews were held with social workers and due to the pandemic the interviews had to be held digitally. The empirical material was then analyzed with the help of emotional theories and concepts as well as with parts of Goffman's theory about backstage and frontstage. The result of the study showed that there were three main subjects that the professionals thought were the most challenging but also had the most opportunities in the work with the male perpetrators. These three subjects were the motivational work with the clients, to create and maintain alliances and the work of feelings of shame among the clients, both in non-compulsory and court-ordered treatment. The result also showed that the professionals have different strategies for maintaining their emotions in therapy with the clients and that they choose which emotions they show the client through deep or superficial action, this for the maintenance of professionalism. The conclusion of the study is that there are challenges and opportunities with the treatment work with male perpetrators and that it thus means that they need to focus on increasing knowledge about working with the target group.  A further conclusion is that social workers choosing which emotions they show the clients in order to maintain their professionalism.
