Objectives:The aim of this studies have been to understand and find out how the libraries in the Umeå regioncooperationmotivated theirtransition to the dewey decimal classification system(DDC) and how they responded to opposition and counterarguments to the transition. Further the study aims to producenewinformation tothe subject of reclassification by adapting an organization theoryapproachto the two research questions. (1) How do the publiclibrariesin the umeå region cooperation motivate a transition to DDC. And (2) What strategieshas been used to respond to opposition and counterarguments in the process of transitionto DDC.Theory and Methods:Organization theoryis used to understand how people act and think in an organization. In this study selected parts concerning motivation and resistance to changein an organisation have been used as a framework in the interpretation of the data collected. The method for collecting data has been done by conductingsemi-structured interviewswith (3) representativesfrom different libraries in the region. The selection of respondents was done by strategicallyidentifying people who had both knowledge and experience relevant to the studiesobjectives. Transcripted interviews was later analyzed using thematicanalysis as described by Braun andClarke (2006)where the raw data is coded and placed into themes describingdifferent aspects of the research question.Resultsand conclusion:The study shows that the motivations used to reclassify could be divided between motivations within the organizationand those outside the organization. The ones within consisted of (1) a will by the employees to learn and develop both personally and as an organization, (2) advantages in Dewey and (3) as a proactive change for the future disappearanceof the national classification system. The outside organizational motivations was (1) a reactive change due to the national librariesrecommendation to reclassify, (2) a reaction to a more international world and (3) external changes making it wise to reclassify. Thestrategiesused to respond to opposition and counterarguments in the process of reclassification was shown to focus on cultural responses by (1) making it possible for libraries to adapt the DDC to fit theirown collectionand (2) mediatea sense of self-determining among libraries, Also (3) creating opportunities for cooperation and dialogbetween differentlibraries,and (4) organize educationon the new system. Lastly(5)the reclassification process had dedicated employees being able to respond when faced with oppoisition and motivate the reclassificationto DDC.
