Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar como e por quais motivos a Antiguidade clássica é utilizada na elaboração dos conceitos de barbárie e civilização na obra Os Sertões, de Euclides da Cunha. Através dos estudos da retórica e da teoria da recepção, investigo quais são as fontes do autor para a elaboração dessas referências e como elas são lidas e significadas pelo autor. Ao final, interpreto a elaboração peculiar das noções de bárbaro e civilizado presentes na obra a partir dessa vinculação entre seus conhecimentos sobre o Mundo antigo e sua observação sobre o conflito de Canudos. / This work aims to analyze how and for what reasons the Classical Antiquity is used in the elaboration of the concepts of barbarism and civilization in Os Sertões, by Euclides da Cunha. Based in studies of rhetoric and reception theory, I investigate what are the sources by the author in preparing these references and how they are read and the author meant. At the end, I interpret the development of the peculiar notions of barbarian and civilized present in Cunha’s book using the link between their knowledge of the Ancient World and your observation about the conflict in Canudos.
