Previous issue date: 2015 / The present paper aims to analyse the speeches of the Ceará intellectuals in the 1880s, seeking to understand how the evolutionist ideas were received, as well as their influence on the way of thinking about nature, race and the progress of Brasil and the Ceará province. Ceará intellectuals worked together in several periodicals circulating in its capital, Fortaleza, through which their ideas were spreaded. With the analysis of the sources, namely newspapers, we realize that Justiniano de Serpa, Antonio Martins, João Lopes, Pedro de Queiroz and other intellectuals thought about the society they lived, environment and mankind in general, based upon their theoretical influences. Darwinism, Spencerianism and racialism were some of the evolutionary theories that became popular since the second half of the nineteenth century and contributed to the rise of a worldview that drove many intellectuals around the world to seek explanations for the realities in which they lived and to elaborate progressist solutions aiming the improvement of their society. Our discussion is based on the analysis of texts published in periodicals of Fortaleza in the 1880s, where we perceive the influence of evolutionist thought, seeking to realize how the evolutionist theories were appropriated by intellectuals, as well as to understand their interpretations of Ceará society, mankind and the environment. / O presente trabalho busca analisar os discursos dos letrados do Ceará no decênio de 1880, visando compreender como o ideário evolucionista foi recebido e como influenciaram a forma de pensar a natureza, a raça e o progresso do Brasil e da província do Ceará. Os letrados do Ceará colaboravam em diversos periódicos que circulavam em sua capital, Fortaleza, por meio dos quais suas ideias eram divulgadas. Com a análise das fontes, notadamente os jornais, percebemos que Justiniano de Serpa, Antônio Martins, João Lopes, Pedro de Queiroz e outros letrados refletiram acerca da sociedade em que viviam, do meio físico e do homem em geral a partir de suas influências teóricas. Darwinismo, spencerianismo e racialismo foram algumas das teorias evolutivas que se popularizaram a partir da segunda metade do século XIX e contribuíram para o surgimento de uma visão de mundo que impulsionou diversos intelectuais do mundo a buscar explicações para as realidades que vivenciavam e a formular soluções progressistas para o melhoramento de sua sociedade. Nossa discussão baseia-se na análise dos textos veiculados pelos periódicos de Fortaleza nos anos 1880 em que visualizamos a influência do pensamento evolucionista, buscando perceber de que maneira as teorias evolutivas foram apropriadas pelos letrados, bem como compreender suas interpretações acerca da sociedade do Ceará, do homem e do meio.
