This thesis studies the knowledge fundaments in modern philosophy according the French philosopher René Descartes. Through bibliographic research, we intend to explore three concepts in his work, which, despite the different times and themes that define them, show an unparalleled continuity. The methodological issue, approached in The Rules, allowed us to explain the rational conditions to human understanding (intuition and deduction) and the method. With the knowledge of nature exposed in The World, we see a new possibility to explain the universe, where matter reduced to extension becomes quantifiable and, thus, knowable. The Meditations, last text analyzed by us, support the rational knowledge, breaking with aristotelical-tomist tradition. Always searching for certainties to constitute science, we
find in the I thinking the first truth of a chain of reasons, where predominate clarity and distinction. The new Philosophy offers to science the criterion of correlation trough dissimilarity, distinguishes the thinking being from the thought thing, confers
objective validity to the ideas and proves the existence of God, assigning Him the creation and maintenance of the universe. This proof is considered a condition to
validate knowledge. / A presente dissertação consiste no estudo dos fundamentos do conhecimento da filosofia moderna, de acordo com o filósofo francês René Descartes. Por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica, procuramos explorar três elaborações do autor, as quais, apesar dos diferentes momentos e temas que as caracterizam, denotam uma continuidade ímpar. A questão metodológica, abordada a partir das Regras, permitiu-nos explicar as condições racionais do entendimento humano (intuição e dedução) e do método. Com o conhecimento da Natureza expresso em O Mundo, verificamos uma nova possibilidade de explicação do universo, onde a matéria
reduzida à extensão torna-se quantificável e, assim, cognoscível. As Meditações, último texto por nós analisado, fundamentam o conhecimento racional rompendo com a tradição aristotélico-tomista. Sempre em busca de certezas para constituir a ciência, encontramos no Eu pensante a primeira verdade de uma cadeia de razões, onde predominam a clareza e a distinção. A nova filosofia oferece à ciência o critério da correspondencia pela dissemelhança, distingue o ser pensante da coisa extensa, confere validade objetiva às ideias e prova a existência de Deus atribuindo-lhe a
criação e a manutenção do universo. Essa prova é considerada como condição para validar o conhecimento.
