Previous issue date: 1998 / Resumo: Esta dissertação analisa, em diferentes momentos e situações, a ambigüidade que marca a construção de imagens recíprocas entre brasileiros e portugueses. Faz-se uso de material etnográfico levantado junto a duas associações portuguesas do Rio de Janeiro com vistas à percepção das estratégias utilizadas por seus membros na reconstrução de identidades diferenciadas, seja nas relações com outros portugueses, seja no embate com a sociedade brasileira. Percebe-se que suas formas de identificação variam contextualmente e reproduzem as ambivalências que permeiam as relações entre os dois países, baseadas na retórica da irmandade ¿ a crença de que Brasil e Portugal são pátrias-irmãs, com culturas que, ao longo de suas histórias, se fundem numa só cultura: a "luso-brasileira" o estudo de recentes conflitos diplomáticos entre os dois países evidenciou a referida ambigüidade. A cada episódio, uma relação estrutural se repete. Há, num primeiro momento, uma crise diplomática, com trocas de acusações e imagens negativas de ambas as partes. Em seguida, evocam-se os laços afetivos que unem os dois países, assim como a ideologia a eles subjacentes, qual seja, a negação do conflito. Conclui-se que a retórica da irmandade reforça a ambigüidade das relações entre brasileiros e portugueses, reduzindo os conflitos entre ambos a "problemas familiares", mascarando as. diferenças de fato existentes e relegando-as para a próxima crise episódica que surgir / Abstract: This dissertation analyses, in several moments and situations, the ambiguity that characterizes the construction of reciprocity images between Brazilians and Portuguese. Ethnographic material was collected in two Portuguese associations located in Rio de Janeiro, with the objective of perceiving the strategies used by their members in reconstructing the differentiated identities, either in their relations with other Portuguese or facing the Brazilian society. It is made clear that their forms of identification vary according to the context and that they reproduce the ambiguities that permeate the relationship between the two countries. This relationship is supported by the rhetoric of "brotherhood" the belief that Brazil and Portugal are "sister-nations", with cultures that, throughout their history, molded themselves into a sole culture , the so-called "luso-brasileira" culture. The study of recent diplomatic conflicts between the two countries proved the above mentioned ambiguity. Each episode repeats the structural relationship. In the first moment there is a diplomatic crisis, with an interchange of accusations and negative images coming out from both sides. Soon after, emotional bonds that unite both countries are brought about, as well as the ideolqgy that is behind these bonds . In other words, the field is open to the negation of the conflict. The dissertation ends by concluding that the rhetoric of brotherhood reinforces the ambiguity of the reldtionship between Brazilians and Portuguese. It reduces the conflicts between both countries to "family problems", covering up the existing "de facto" differences and putting fhem aside, until the next crisis comes / Mestrado
