Previous issue date: 2010-11-08 / This summary covers a study of 20 ex-votos [votive offerings], from a visual analysis, from the 18th century produced in the auriferous region of Minas Gerais that are currently exposed in the votive offerings room of the Sanctuary Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, in Congonhas, Minas Gerais. The chosen votive offerings as objects are the ones represented through paintings dated from the period of 1720 to 1780. They are part of the votive offerings group landmarked by the Art and Landmark Commission Office in December 1980. The study of the colonial society from Minas Gerais was necessary and led me to work on specific issues with the intention of identifying, through the images portrayed on the votive boards of the 18th century XVIII, the relations created between people and saints: Who are the people that use the votive offerings as a dialogue resource with Catholic saints? In what moments do they seek the saints' help? Which saints are evoked for each type of situation? How do they represent the facts and the miracles received? In what kind of environment does contact with sacredness occur? Do the environments and locations portrayed describe something about these people? What is the incidence of the votive offerings between Caucasians and Afro-Brazilians and between men and women? Is there a common noticeable profile? For the development of this work we subdivided the studies among the comprehension of the formation processes of the society from Minas Gerais, the religion significance in its ordinance, studies on iconography to define the representations of the religious discourse, survey of the most significant religious popular manifestations from the colonial period, and material analysis of documents and in loco on the votive offerings presented in this study / Este estudo parte da análise visual de 20 ex-votos do século XVIII,
produzidos na região aurífera de Minas Gerais e hoje expostos na sala dos exvotos
do Santuário de Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, em Congonhas do Campo,
MG. Os ex-votos escolhidos como objeto são os representados por meio de
pinturas datadas do período de 1720 a 1780. Eles fazem parte do conjunto de
ex-votos tombados pelo Conselho Consultivo da Secretaria do Patrimônio
Histórico e Artístico, em dezembro de 1980.
O estudo da sociedade colonial mineira fez-se necessário e levou-me a
trabalhar a partir de questões pontuais com o intuito de identificar, pelas
imagens retratadas nas tábuas votivas do século XVIII, as relações criadas
entre pessoas e santos. Outras questões se tornaram essenciais, como: quem
são as pessoas que se utilizam dos ex-votos como recurso de diálogo com os
santos católicos? Em que momentos procuram a ajuda dos santos? Quais os
santos invocados para cada tipo de situação? Como representam os fatos e os
milagres recebidos? Em que tipo de ambiente acontece o contato com o
sagrado? Os ambientes e locais retratados dizem alguma coisa sobre essas
pessoas? Qual a incidência dos ex-votos entre brancos e negros e entre
homens e mulheres? Há um perfil comum que é possível perceber?
Para o desenvolvimento deste trabalho, subdividimos o estudo entre o
entendimento dos processos de formação da sociedade colonial mineira, o
significado da religião no seu ordenamento, estudos sobre iconografia para
definir as representações do discurso religioso, levantamento das
manifestações populares religiosas mais significativas da época colonial e
análise material, de documentos e in-loco, sobre os ex-votos
