Förpackningsdesign och dess betydelse inom e-handeln : En studie om hur kvalitet kan kommuniceras online med hjälp av visuella aspekter / Packaging design and its importance in e-commerce : A study on how quality can be communicated online using visual aspects

The digitalization has contributed to a large increase in e-commerce during the last few years. The increase of internet shopping means that the customer’s first impression of a product nowadays often occurs online. The purpose of this study is to create a better understanding about packaging design and its impact on the consumer’s perception of product quality online. The study examines how the consumer perceive visual design of a product in a digital environment to get an insight of what to consider when products are sold in an e-commerce. An environmental analysis and user tests have been conducted to examine the study’s research questions. The following aspects were confirmed to help convey quality through packaging design: The packaging material is glossy and includes metallic elements. The text consists of capital letters and is in a normal font weight. The logo is placed high on the packaging. When products are presented on an e-commerce platform, it’s important to also consider the following factors: The product images are in high quality, with accurate colors and contrast. The materials of the products are shown in an appealing manner. There are multiple product images where the images have a low complexity with a solid, light background. In conclusion, the study found a strong correlation between packaging design and the presentation in a web shop. To present product quality online, it’s not enough to only have a good packaging design. The product on the e-commerce platform also needs to be presented in a way that communicates a high level of quality.
