This thesis is concerned with an investigation of undergraduate university students' perceptions of the fairness of educational assessment. / A grounded theory approach, based on the work of Glaser and Strauss (1967) and Glaser (1978, 1992), was used to develop a substantive theory. The major sources of data were transcribed in-depth interviews with 20 students, and selectively transcribed interviews with another 14 students. All were studying undergraduate degrees in an Australian university, in areas broadly described as 'Management and Commerce', 'Society and Culture' and 'Agriculture, Environmental and related studies'. / I identified that students regarded fairness in assessment as: having the opportunity to demonstrate their capability, and perceiving that their capability is recognised.
