Arbeiterstrich und Tarifdrücker : Die Übersetzungsproblematik von Metaphern, Falschen Freunden und Nominalausdrücken in deutscher Gebrauchsprosa

This essay deals with the translation and analysis of three different texts about the conditionson the German labour market. The texts were published by the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel between November 2006 and January 2007. The essay focuses on three difficult aspects namely metaphors, false friends and nominal style and consists of two parts. The first part deals with the terminology about translation theories. In addition the source texts were defined in the mater of type and style of texts. The second part of this study deals with the analysis of the translations of the three source texts. The result of the analysis shows that metaphors, especially literary metaphors like Arbeiterstrich, often be translated with descriptions and that the figure of speech was lost. The relationship between the German and Swedish language results in many so-called false friends and the analysis deals with some words like Tarif and ad hoc creations like Tarifdrücker. The nominal style is a typical character of the German newspaper language. Because the Swedish language prefer to use more verbs, it was necessary to use translations procedures like transpositions. Three difficult aspects were discussed and further studies, especially ad hoc creations, would to be of use for future translations studies. Keywords: Translation, Metaphors, False Friends, Noun-phrases, German labour market
