Hur uppfattas engelska i Sverige och hur bedrivs engelskundervisning i grundskolan, som ett främmande eller andra språk?

The aim of this study is to describe the role English has in Sweden, as a second or foreign language. A lot of research shows that English in Sweden has become more of a second language than a foreign language because the amount of English in Sweden has increased in society. To investigate this, the following questions are addressed: ● By what methods is English taught in middle school? ● How does English's position in society affect English teaching in middle school? ● How do teachers experience English, as a second or foreign language? The study is based on interviews, observations and statistics. I will throe two interviews aim to get closer to the purpose of the study by asking for teachers' opinions and arguments about English in Sweden. By observing the teachers' classes I aim to analyze the methods that observations shows and draw a line between wither the methods are indicative of teaching English as a foreign or second language. Also by questionnary survey I aim to find out where and how pupils meet English outside the classroom. My study describes throe interviews with teachers that English in Sweden is more of a second language then a foreign language. The questionnary survey also shows that children are exposed to English outside the classroom, in form of media. The observations shows that regular English classroom mostly is based on the grammar- translation approach while the un regular classroom ”treklassystem” shows a development by being based on the communicative approach and direct approach.
