In this essay the use of pronouns in educational textbooks teaching Swedish languagehistory, intended for compulsory school (grade 7–9) is examined, the purpose beingto investigate the aspect of interculturality in the texts. The questions asked are:What interpersonal meaning is mediated in the texts, and in what way is thismeaning compatible with an intercultural approach? To answer these questions ananalysis of the use of personal pronouns is carried out, aimed at the interpersonalmetafunction within the framework of Systemic Functional Grammar. Three printedand one digital textbook are examined. The analysis shows that the textbooks to someextent use an address that promotes interculturality, and at the same time tend toreproduce the perception of a Swedish us and a foreign them.
