Previous issue date: 2008-02-29 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior-CAPES / This study had two main objectives: assess information about site fidelity and abundance
estimation of Sotalia guianensis in Sepetiba Bay (22o35'S, 44o03'W), State of Rio de Janeiro,
southeastern Brazil. To evaluate site fidelity, we used a photo-identification catalogue from
February 1994 and July 2006, which have 217 identified individual dolphins. Seventy-nine
animals (36.4%) were resighted at least once during the study period, and the average interval
between resightings was 40.6 ? 31.1 months. Large numbers of mother-and-calf pairs were
recorded throughout the 12 years of study, and new individuals were constantly identified in the
area as shown by the photographic records. The results suggest that part of the dolphin population
depends on the habitat provided by Sepetiba Bay for feeding and for the purposes of
reproduction, whilst other members use it only for short periods of time. To estimate the
population size, a new catalogue was made from 14 boat-based surveys from April 2006 to April
2007. We took 9,990 photographs of dolphin and, of these, 2,567 images were of sufficient
quality for analysis. We identified and cataloged 382 dolphins from distinctive nicks and notches
on their dorsal fins. 153 dolphins were photographed on more than one occasion. Estimates of
population size were obtained by using capture-recapture models for closed population. The
resulting estimates, scaled to account the proportion of marked dolphins in the population (0.53),
are 989 animals (IC 95% 965-1057) to Schnabel Estimator; 1060 animals (IC 05% 1004-1117) to
Schumacher-Eschmeyer Estimator; 1043 animals (IC 95% 999-1115) to Model Mt; and 1085
animals (IC 95% 1016-1154) to Model Mth. These results represent the largest population ever
reported to Sotalia guianensis.
A presen?a
