You Have To Be A Man, Fam : En multimodal kritisk diskursanalys av maskulinitet i Top Boy med fokus på hegemonisk maskulinitet och intersektionalitet.

This study aims to examine the representation of masculinity in the TV-series Top Boy, in relation to hegemonic masculinity and intersectionality in order to see how masculinity is depicted, if this depiction could be interpreted as contributing to the hegemony in the context of the show, and how intersectional factors are responsible in creating the fundament for this social construction. The series is analysed with a multimodal critical discourse analysis. The focus of the study revolves around the three main characters of Top Boy; Dushane, Sully, and Jamie. Two thematics laid the groundwork for further analysis of the chosen scenes, which were chosen through individual coding of the series as most prominent throughout the show with the purpose of the study in mind; 1) fatherhood and 2) men showing vulnerability, and their contribution to the social construction of masculinty. The characters tended to follow hegemonic norms, often as a product of their intersectional circumstances, but with some exceptions to the norm. Highlighting the complex nature that intersectionality brings to the analysis, the findings further contribute to the view of masculine representation throughout media, and how masculinity in the context of British criminality can be interpreted.
