The aim of this thesis will mainly be to analyze and criticize W. C. Smith's conceptions of truth. lt will be suggested that Smith's conceptions have things in common with pragmatic, performative and correspondence theories of truth. Insofar as Smith approximates these theories, he becomes subject to criticisms directed against them. The most critical problem in truth theory, it will be argued, is the relationship between conceptualization and reality. There are four main alternatives in this regard.
