The aim for this essay is to investigate which relations there are between reading motivation among students in the eighth grade and the reading activities performed in school. A survey is used to investigate the phenomenon. The survey contains open and closed questions. The survey is implemented on students in the eighth grade in a school in Sweden. The essay is based on the sociocultural theory perspective. This perspective see education as a process in which the students knowledge develops with help from either a teacher or an other student. Students become more motivated to read if they are able to choose their reading and if they are able to discuss their experience of the book with other students. It helps them to better understand what they read and this leads to more motivation to read other books and texts. The results show that the reading motivation has a relation to the reading activities which are performed in school.
