Abstract This study investigates possible causes it for three students in 6th grade not improving their reading comprehension. What teaching have they received and how did they perceived the teaching? The study consists of questionnaires to teachers and interviews with students and teachers. The policy documents the school uses are Lgr11 and a local language plan. Unfortunately, the language plan has not reached all the way to the teachers' teaching. Different teachers teach different in reading comprehension, there is no common teaching plan in the school. Pupils’ and teachers’ answers about classroom teaching are consistent with each other, which may means that students assimilate the teaching they receive. What no student received instruction in is metacognition, which may affect in what way they read texts and how they understand what they read. A more controlled and structured reading teaching could improve student performance in reading comprehension.
