This study aims to create a better understanding of how the subject of reading and more specifically reading comprehension is being approached and understood within the upper secondary schools in Sweden and also to find out if anything has changed in recent years. This is done by performing a systematic review of several research studies concerning the subjects of reading, reading comprehension and the use of reading strategies within said upper secondary schools. All of these studies have been written within the last ten years and can, when analyzed and compared, provides a better understanding of how reading comprehension is understood and handled within the Swedish school, how the actual teaching of the subject of reading is being carried out and finally how reading strategies can play a part in strengthening reading comprehension and if this is something that is actually being done today.All of the researchers points out that the reading instructions over all and more specifically the reading comprehension and the reading strategies on the upper secondary schools can be improved. Some of the keypoints highlighted are the awareness of reading strategies and how they can be used and to motivate the students to read. The researchers cannot, however, come to an agreement of how that best can be done. It can also be ascertain that the National agency for Education needs to clarify the instructions concerning reading instructions so that the teachers are able to educate and motivate the students in the best possible way.
