Nyandlighet i Andarnas rike : En kvalitativ studie om hur nyandlighet framställs i en svensk tv-produktion

This study aims to analyze the depictions of new age and the depictions of why practitioners practice different forms of new age made by SVT’s (the Swedish public television company) series Andarnas rike (The realm of the spirits). To deeper the understanding of the depictions of the practitioners reasons has Heelas and Woodhead’s (2005) descriptions of” the subjective turn” been used. The depictions of new age practice have been analyzed by using five of Ammermans (2021) seven dimensions of lived religion. A qualitative content analysis was used to sort the material. The material consist of four episodes á 28 minutes each whick is available to watch on SVT Play. The results describing why practitioners prac- tice new age shows five different reasons to why practitioners practice new age, for example the wish to get in contact with someone, or a spirit, in a spiritual dimension. The result of the depictions of new age shows a multidimensional understanding for new age practice, the tv-series involves different forms of practice and practitioners. One important notice is that the reasons to why practitioners choose new age practices deepen the understandings of how new age practice is portrayed in the series. Many practices, especially those involving a medium, are visually and verbally presented quite similar in terms of how these practices proceed.
