This research aims to search for an underlying literary canon in the textbooks for the English 6 course in the Swedish upper secondary school. This essay also has the intention to find out whether three different curriculums affected the literary content of the textbooks and how the curriculums changed over time period of 30 years in relation to literature for the English 6 course. A convenience sample was taken in the form of six textbooks, their date of origin spread evenly between 1988 and 2017. The study found no underlying literary canon in the textbooks, with two authors at most reoccurring in four of the six textbooks. With each curriculum teachers in Sweden receive more individual trust to make a choice for themselves which literature and authors to work with. Curriculum discourse has allowed time being dedicated to other alternatives to literature, such as films, tv-series and music.
