This study explores the depiction of fathers in older and contemporary literature. Based on the aim to examine equality problems in relation to the process of family-forming, the essay draws conclusions from the literature aided by theories on gender and masculinity. Through a narrative analysis, the study intend to compare the depictions to show on continuities or lack thereof.Through clarifying the contextual background of the works, the content has been studied through terms of equality, masculinity issues and stereotypical depictions of gender. The study has shown that the depiction of fathers confirm and cement differences between genders, masculinity as a carrier of violence and a correlation in the identification of one’s fatherhood with the exercise of power. By illustrating these conclusions the study aims to provide a basis for teaching equality in upper secondary schools in accordance with the curricula.
