This essay will focus on how violence and masculinity create the identity of a football hooligan. What role does violence and masculinity have when a football hooligan creates their individual identity as well as their collective identity as they use violence and hypermasculinity to earn prestige and honour for their football club. The essay will use the book "En av Grabbarna" written by Johan Höglund who is a former hooligan. The book follows how Johan Höglund is first introduced to football violence, and it takes him on a path to be one of the leading men in his group of hooligans. The essay will analyze how a secular outlook on life can be seen in the life of hooligans who use violence to define themselves and promotes a type of masculinity that thrives by the physical domination of other men.
