The aim of this study was to examine which historic and present discourses that have been used in the construction of the ideal Swedish citizen as it is today. The study also examined what role the Swedish educational system plays in this construction of citizenship and what consequences it has, not only for the individual but for society in large as well. A content analysis was used to interpret 16 scientific articles in the field of citizenship studies. In the result four different perspectives of citizenship are outlined with own characteristics, norms, ideals and criteria. These were: the ethnic, the traditional, the neo liberal and the cosmopolitan perspective on citizenship. These four were not necessarily separate from each other, instead they interlace in order to create the ideal citizen. Another distinction was made between citizenship in a legal and/or formal sense and an emotional one. The Swedish educational system plays a role in the creation of good citizens and from a societal point of view, it seems like the educational system in Sweden increase the gaps between the individuals who possess the right norms and the individuals that are not possessing the right norms. The creation of citizenship ideals is not a short process, but it is rather based on centuries of assimilation ideals.
