in our cities as a category of urban landscape, using as basis to this study the analysis of the
social appropriation of the square in Guaianases, in the suburbs of São Paulo. The Guaianases
square, which from the year 2001 to 2003 went through a remodeling process through an
Urban Interventions Municipal Program called Urban Centralities, presents an unique
appropriation manner which reveals a social logic that is a result of the conditions of the
subjects that use the square. Therefore, apart from only describing the multiple ways of using
the open urban areas in the suburbs of São Paulo, in this study we tried to learn about the
social appropriation of this square according to the main determiners that reproduce the urban
landscape in which it is in, respecting the process of social and historical constitution. This
way, we tried to show that the social function of the Guaianases square is a product of the
production and appropriation of the material lives of the people of that neighborhood, which
makes it an important object for studies in order to understand the unique way that these
particular individuals socialize / Esta pesquisa pretende compreender a constituição histórico-social das praças de
nossas cidades enquanto categoria da paisagem urbana, tendo como referencial de análise a
apropriação social de uma Praça localizada em Guaianases, periferia da cidade de São Paulo.
A Praça de Guaianases, que entre os anos de 2001 e 2003 passou por um processo de
remodelação urbana através de um Programa Municipal de Intervenções Urbanas intitulado
Centralidades Urbanas, apresenta uma forma específica de apropriação que revela uma lógica
de constituição social que é produto das condições objetivas dos indivíduos que a fruem.
Assim, ao contrário de apenas descrever as múltiplas formas de utilização desses espaços
livres urbanos da periferia de São Paulo, este trabalho buscou apreender a apropriação social
dessa praça de acordo com as principais determinantes que reproduzem a paisagem em que
está inserida, respeitando, desse modo, seu processo de constituição histórico-social. Desta
forma, procuramos demonstrar que a função social realizada pela Praça de Guaianases é
produto das condições concretas e do modo de produção e apropriação da vida material dos
indivíduos desse bairro, o que á torna um importante objeto de estudo para entender a forma
particular de sociabilização desses indivíduos
