Previous issue date: 2016-02-29 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the oropharyngeal dimensions and the maxillary and mandibular position in class II patients, after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) associated with high-pull headgear. The sample consisted of 40 individuals that were divided into two groups. The experimental group consisted of 21 patients, with Class II Division 1 malloclusion who underwent RME associated with a high-pull headgear. The control group consisted in 19 patients with transverse maxillary deficiency, who underwent only RME. The evaluation was conducted using cone beam computed tomography scans in two different times: initial (T1) and 6 months after the proposed treatments for each group (T2). A paired-sample t test was used for intra-group comparisons. To compare the results (T2), it was used an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) adjusted by baseline measures. No significant changes were found in the oropharyngeal dimensions of the experimental group (p>0,05). The high-pull headgear associated with RME increased the palatal plane inclination and moved down the maxillary A point. On the other hand, the control group showed a significant oropharyngeal area increase (p=0,040) after the RME. The RME moved downward the maxillary A point. There were no significant mandibular changes in both groups. / O objetivo deste estudo retrospectivo foi avaliar tridimensionalmente as dimens?es da orofaringe e a posi??o da maxila e mand?bula de pacientes classe II ap?s a expans?o r?pida da maxila associada ao aparelho extrabucal com tra??o alta, atrav?s de tomografia computadorizada cone beam. A amostra foi constitu?da por 40 indiv?duos, que foram separados em 2 grupos distintos. O Grupo Experimental foi composto por 21 pacientes, portadores de classe II, 1a divis?o e que foram submetidos ? expans?o r?pida da maxila (ERM) associada ao uso do aparelho extrabucal (AEB) com puxada alta e for?a ortop?dica. O Grupo Controle foi formado por 19 pacientes, com defici?ncia maxilar transversa e que foram submetidos somente ? ERM. A avalia??o foi realizada em tomografias computadorizadas cone beam de face nos tempos: inicial (T1) e 6 meses ap?s os tratamentos propostos para cada grupo (T2). Foi aplicado o Teste t de amostras emparelhadas para compara??es intragrupo. Para a compara??o das medidas de T2, foi usado um modelo de an?lise de covari?ncia (ANCOVA) com ajustes pelas medidas basais. N?o foram encontradas altera??es nas dimens?es da orofaringe do Grupo Experimental (p>0,05). O AEB associado ? ERM causou um aumento da inclina??o do plano palatal e um deslocamento para baixo do ponto A. Por sua vez, o Grupo Controle apresentou um aumento significativo da ?rea (p=0,040) da orofaringe. A ERM causou o deslocamento do ponto A para baixo. Em nenhum dos grupos houve altera??es significativas na mand?bula.
