more and more space in society. In spite of that, some genres, especially those
belonging to the so-called informative journalism, still have a lot of prestige once they
are believed to pursuit impartiality. Nevertheless, language itself and the decision
making imposed by it do not allow an effectively neuter positioning, hence any
enunciation reflects human experiences and social ideologies.
This research aims the analysis of language constructions characterized as
modality, politeness and ethos in news published in the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo
during the covering of the presidential elections in 2006. Such investigation intends to
stand out linguistic aspects which can be used to lead the reader s opinion according to
the newspaper company. We also pointed out ideologies able to institute social and
group identities and establish belonging criteria to these groups based on goals, values
and behavior.
The theoretical current used is the Critical Discourse Analysis of Fairclough. The
linguistic units analysis in the newspaper discourse was initiated with the reading of the
texts selected from the collection of the public library Mário de Andrade in which we
picked out examples of modality, politeness and ethos. We pointed out the influence of
ideological traces, present in the newspaper company and in the society, in the options
and selections the writer is supposed to make and how it materializes in the language
used in news.
The results indicate the manifestation of particular ideologies and subjectivity in
the news, although it is considered a genre belonging to informative journalism, in which
supposedly there is a commitment to objectivity / A discussão a respeito da manipulação exercida pelos veículos de comunicação
ganha cada vez mais espaço na sociedade. Apesar disso, alguns gêneros, como os
pertencentes ao chamado jornalismo informativo, desfrutam de grande prestígio em
razão de sua suposta busca pela imparcialidade. No entanto, consideramos que a
própria língua e as decisões por ela impostas não permitem um posicionamento
efetivamente neutro, de modo que qualquer enunciado reflete experiências humanas e
ideologias sociais.
Nesta pesquisa, analisam-se construções lingüísticas caracterizadas como
modalidade, polidez e ethos em notícias publicadas no jornal Folha de S. Paulo durante
a cobertura das eleições presidenciais no ano de 2006. Tal investigação visa a
ressaltar aspectos lingüísticos que podem ser utilizados com o intuito de direcionar a
opinião do leitor de acordo com a ideologia da empresa jornalística. Sinalizamos, ainda,
ideologias capazes de instituir identidades sociais e grupais e estabelecer critérios de
pertencimento a esses grupos com base em objetivos, valores e comportamentos.
A fundamentação teórica utilizada é a Análise Crítica do Discurso de Fairclough.
A análise das unidades lingüísticas no discurso do jornal teve início com a leitura de
textos obtidos do acervo da Biblioteca Municipal Mário de Andrade, dos quais foram
extraídos exemplos de modalidade, de polidez e de ethos. Busca-se investigar a
influência de traços ideológicos, presentes na empresa jornalística e na sociedade, nas
opções e seleções que o jornalista precisa fazer e como isso se materializa na
linguagem utilizada na notícia.
Os resultados obtidos apontam para a manifestação de ideologias particulares e
subjetividade na notícia, apesar de este gênero ser classificado como pertencente ao
jornalismo informativo, em que supostamente há compromisso com a objetividade
