Orientador: Hélio Rebello Cardoso Júnior / Banca: Claudio DeNipoti / Banca: Gabriel Giannattasio / Resumo: Apreender as particularidade das práticas de leitura tornou-se um dos objetivos da História da leitura, o que permite o acesso privilegiado aos padrões culturais que conferem, a um certo período histórico, uma áurea de singularidade. Nesse sentido, esta dissertação pretende colaborar com as análises acerca da leitura e de suas práticas. Escolhemos, para tal tarefa, o romancista José de Alencar, que, não por acaso, também foi um assíduo leitor - devorador de romances, crônicas coloniais, relatos de viagem, produções e estudos do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro - como outros de seu tempo. Essa sede pela leitura pode ser percebida em suas obras fictícias como, do mesmo modo, em correspondências, autobiografia, prefácios, pós-escritos e nas várias indicações de leitura em suas notas de rodapé em obras como O Guarani - eleita para este trabalho. Tais discursos permitiram mapear um leitor que deixou registro dos locais de leitura, das obras lidas e, principalmente, da apropriação de leituras acerca de um elemento essencial: o indígena. Tal elemento, de fato, coloca a obra de José de Alencar em contato com o grande pano de fundo da cultura do romantismo e do nacionalismo no século XIX, especialmente no Brasil. Dessa forma, este trabalho teve, como objetivo, compreender - por meio da História da leitura - como os discursos existentes em determinadas narrativas foram apreendidos por Alencar para a composição do índio em O Guarani. / Abstract: To aprehend the particularities of the reading practices became one of the objectives of the Histoty of the reading, allowing a privileged access to the cultural standards that confer to a certain historical period its singularity. In that sense, this paper intends to contribute with the analyses about the reading and their practices. For such task we chose the novelist José de Alencar who, no by chance, was also an assiduous reader of romances, colonial chronicles, trip reports, productions and studies of The Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute - as others in his time. That thirst for the reading can be noticed in their fictitious works, correspondences, autobiography, forewords, postscripts and in several reading indications on their baseboard notes in works as O Guarani - subject of this work. Those speeches allowed to map a reader that left registration of the reading places, works readed and mainly of the appropriation of readings concerning an essential element: the native. Such element, in fact, puts the work of José de Alencar in contact with the great backdrop of the culture of the romanticism and nationalism in the century XIX, especially in Brazil. Thus, this work had as objective understands - through the History of the reading - how the speeches existent in certain narratives were apprehended by Alencar for the composition of the native in O Guarani. / Mestre
