Background: Injury preventive training decreases the chances of sports injuries. In athletics, the athletes often suffer from acute injuries as well as overload injuries. The majority of the athletes in athletics in Sweden are youths. The trainers had an authority on how the injury preventive training is used, and the behavior is regulated by different factors in the environment and by individual factors. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions regarding injury preventive training of athletic trainers for youths between the ages of 12-17 years. Methods: A qualitative interview study was made with semi structured questions. Four athletic trainers were recruited and were interviewed individually. The analysis was made with a qualitative content analysis. Result: Two domains were generated from the qualitative content analysis: “Individual ways of contemplating and approaching the phenomenon” which contains “The phenomenon of injury preventive training” and “The trainers’ attitude”. The second domain “Circumstances in the trainers’ environment” contains “Communication and a holistic view in nearest social environment”, “Conditions for implementation among trainers and their physical environment” and “Development of competence in the corporation of athletic trainers”. Conclusion: The athletic trainers had an understanding of what injury preventive training means. Yet, there were different factors in the environment and among the individuals that influenced the behavior. Examples from the categories are lack of time, knowledge, information and a holistic view within the association. The result corresponded with the description of how the behavior is influenced by the environment and by the individual from the social cognitive theory. A suggestion for further research are which method are the most effective way for the implementation of injury preventive training in athletics.
