Vem räknar vad och hur? : En studie av gymnasiematematiken i yrkeslivet

This thesis tries to describe the use of mathematics in some workplace tasks. In particular the math corresponding to subjects of high school math courses B, C and D, is identified. Furthermore, the study attempts to analyze the nature of the way in which this math comes to use. This is represented by six different competences. Interviews with five (5) professionals, within different areas, are the main sources of information for this study. The aim has also been to find tasks that are common in the sense of not being isolated and solely performed by a small group of professionals, on a nationwide basis. Analyzing the result gives a narrow and fragmented view of what out-of-school mathematics do look like. Nevertheless there are some good examples, from different workplaces, of use of statistics and annuities. Most widely employed, according to the analysis, are the competences for handling communication, algorithms, and modeling. Some ‘hidden’ mathematics were observed and that will also be discussed. Perhaps in the future math will be performed by computer programs only?
