Introduction: Substance addiction is a dependence on various drugs and/or alcohol. People living with substance addiction feel a strong need for one or more psychoactive substances and they often possess a lost sense of consequences. Substance addiction leads to a reduced quality of life, they can suffer from mental- and physical illnesses. Aim: The aim was to describe how people with substance addiction experience the treatment of healthcare professionals. Method: A literature review based on ten scientific articles with a qualitative approach. Literature searches were conducted in the databases PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO. All articles were analyzed using a quality review template according to Forsberg and Wengström (2016) for studies with a qualitative design. Results: Three categories emerged based on peoples’ experiences of healthcare professional’s treatment: Positive and negative experiences of treatment, Perceived lack of knowledge on the part of the healthcare professionals and Experiences of communication between healthcare professionals and patients. Healthcare professional’s without a judgemental attitude and professionals who showed sympathy and empathy were considered as positive experiences in treatment. Stigma was a factor that negatively affected patients’ experiences. Patients experienced dissatisfaction when meeting healthcare professionals with lack of knowledge. It was appreciated by patients when healthcare professionals provided relevant information and were responsive and open for discussion. Conclusions: Patients with substance addiction had both positive and negative experiences of encounters in healthcare. Previous experiences were crucial for patients' attitudes regarding future healthcare encounters. Knowledgeable and responsive healthcare professionals improved treatment in healthcare according to patients.
