Defesa: Curitiba, 28/06/2017 / Inclui referências : f. 250-254 / Resumo: Monasticon (1848) é uma coletânea que abarca duas narrativas históricas, coligidas pelo próprio Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877), contextualizadas em períodos diferentes de Portugal ou que antecederam a formação do Estado português, mas que, mesmo assim, são representativos na História do país. Eurico, o presbítero, por exemplo, a primeira ficção de Monasticon, está ambientada no declínio do reino visigótico (século VIII), com a invasão árabe na Península Ibérica. Já O Monge de Cistér ou a época de D. João I tem como cenário o século XIV, quando se inaugura a dinastia de Avis, com Dom João I (1357-1433). Ambas as ficções históricas têm uma preocupação em retratar personagens religiosas com uma grande riqueza de detalhes, tanto os que se corrompem quanto os que são tidos como virtuosos, além do esforço do autor para a construção verossímil de uma ambiência condizente com a época onde cada enredo se passa. Essas personagens são também construídas como agentes muito importantes nos desdobramentos das questões histórico-sociais nos contextos onde estão inseridos. Este estudo visa aprofundar a análise de como se dá a construção de tais personagens religiosas em Monasticon, bem como estabelecer uma possível conexão com o momento de produção literária das obras que compõem a coletânea - o século XIX em Portugal. Para tanto, propusemos inicialmente uma discussão sobre a expressão anticlericalismo e um diálogo entre escritos não literários de Herculano, como cartas, missivas e reflexões do autor, com seus Prólogos e Notas em Monasticon. Na sequência, analisamos as duas ficções de Monasticon, focando as personagens religiosas e dialogando com teóricos e outras obras de Herculano, a fim de pensarmos os aspectos positivos e negativos explicitados na representação das figuras eclesiásticas. Palavras-chave: Alexandre Herculano; Eurico, o presbítero; O Monge de Cistér; Personagens religiosas; (Anti)clericalismo / Abstract: Monasticon (1848) is a collection that encompasses two historical narratives, collected by Alexandre Herculano himself (1810-1877), contextualized in different periods of Portugal or before the formation of the Portuguese State, but which are nonetheless representative in the History of the country. Eurico, the presbyter, for example, the first fiction of Monasticon, is set in the decline of the Visigothic kingdom (VIII century), with the Arab invasion in the Iberian Peninsula. On the other hand, The Monk of Cistér or the time of D. João I has as scene the XIV century, when the dynasty of Avis, with Dom João I (1357-1433) is inaugurated. Both historical fictions have a preoccupation in portraying religious personages with a great range of details, both those that are corrupted as those that are considered as virtuous, besides the effort of the author for the credible construction, according to the principles of verisimilitude, of an ambience commensurate with the time where each plot happens. These characters are also constructed as very important agents in the unfolding of the social-historical questions in the contexts where they are inserted. This study aims to deepen the analysis of how the construction of such religious personages in Monasticon occurs, as well as to establish a possible connection with the moment of literary production of the works that compose the collection - the 19th century in Portugal. For this, we initially propose a discussion on the expression anticlericalism and a dialogue between Herculano's non-literary writings, such as letters, missives and reflections of the author, with his Prologues and Notes in Monasticon. In the sequence, we analyze the two fictions of Monasticon, focusing on the religious characters and dialoguing with theoreticians and other works of Herculano, in order to think about the positive and negative aspects explicit in the representation of the ecclesiastical figures.
