Previous issue date: 2018-07-30 / Introduction: Accumulation of dental biofilm is associated with the occurrence of
gingival growth, due to the consequent chronic inflammation of this tissue. Among
the factors cited as stimulants of such growth are fixed orthodontic appliances.
Objective: Investigate the prevalence of gingival overgrowth in individuals that use
fixed orthodontic appliances. Methodology: The sample had 106 individuals of both
sexes. Sociodemographic data related to oral hygiene and orthodontic treatment
were investigated. Clinical examination was performed through periodontal
examination upper and lower anterior teeth using a UNC-15 probe and the World
Health Organization probe. The Visible Plaque Index (IPV), Gingival Overgrowth
Index (GOI), and Miranda-Brunet Index (MBI) for measuring gingival overgrowth.
Results: The Visible Plaque Index (IPV) presented an average of 28.97 ± 22.053.
When verifying the association between sex and bracket type with IPV, no
significance was observed. In relation to gingival overgrowth, significance was found
in height (GOI), only in the vestibular face for males (p = 0.038), in people with lower
income (p = 0.020) and among those who did not use dental floss (p = 0.025). For
gingival overgrowth in thickness (MBI), significance was found only for the vestibular
region with no use of dental floss (p <0.001) and no use of mechanical aid (p =
0.002). Conclusion: It can be concluded that there is a prevalence of gingival
overgrowth in individuals who use orthodontic appliance being more aggravated
among those who take care less of their oral hygiene. / Introdução: O acúmulo do biofilme dentário está associado ao aparecimento de
crescimento gengival, por levar a uma inflamação crônica nesse tecido. Dentre
fatores citados como estimulantes de tal crescimento estão os aparelhos
ortodônticos fixos. Objetivo: Investigar a prevalência do crescimento gengival em
indivíduos que fazem uso de aparelho ortodôntico fixo. Metodologia: A amostra
contou com 106 indivíduos de ambos os sexos. Dados sociodemográficos,
relacionados com a higiene bucal e com o tratamento ortodôntico foram
investigados. O exame clínico foi realizado através do exame periodontal nos dentes
anteriores superiores e inferiores utilizando-se uma sonda UNC-15 e a sonda da
Organização Mundial da Saúde. Foram utilizados o Índice de Placa Visível (IPV),
Gingival Overgrowth Index (GOI) e Miranda-Brunet Índex (MBI) para medição do
crescimento gengival. Resultados: O Índice de Placa Visível (IPV) apresentou uma
média de 28,97± 22,053. Ao verificar a associação entre sexo e tipo de bracket com
IPV, nenhuma significância foi observada. Quanto ao crescimento gengival foi
encontrada significância, em altura (GOI), somente na face vestibular para o sexo
masculino (p=0,038), em pessoas com menor renda (p=0,020) e entre aqueles que
não faziam uso do fio dentário (p=0,025). Já para o crescimento gengival em
espessura (MBI) foi verificada significância apenas para a região vestibular com o
não uso de fio dentário (p<0,001) e não utilização uso de auxílio mecânico
(p=0,002). Conclusão: Pode-se concluir que existe uma prevalência de crescimento
gengival em indivíduos que utilizam aparelho ortodôntico sendo mais agravado entre
aqueles que cuidam menos de sua higiene bucal.
