Previous issue date: 2004-12-15 / The breast cancer has been seen as a cruel and elusive illness and will remain like that until its etiology and cure can be clarified. The cancer pathology is complex and heterogeneous comprising forms of evolution that can be slow or rapidly progressive, the treatment is extensive, painful and most of the times mutilating and all that gave rise to the forming of support groups to women affected by that diagnostic. The support groups for postoperative surgery of breast cancer are based on the fact that mutual support for women that undergone mastectomies is a good way to help them regain their self-esteem and implement all of their physical, psychological and aesthetic potential. The coming together of women that went through the same sort of difficulties provides make room for exchange of experiences and mutual help. The contact with someone else allows for the revision of one s beliefs as well as the questioning of secrets, incomplete information and taboos and finally getting up to date information about the disease clarifying misunderstandings from the past. In our initiative we are trying to realize the meaning of taking part in a support group in Fortaleza, from the breast cancer patient perspective. This is a qualifying study in which the data was gathered from semi-structured interview of 25 women from various groups in the period from April to May 2004. The collected data was organized according to the thematic analysis of Bardin (1977) identifying the following points: socialization of experiences and help for enduring the troubles of daily life and dealing with the uncertainties of the cure. The results show that women see the support groups as of great value in helping with their recovery and social reintegration and also that being admitted to such a group is seen as an enormous tool to overcome their difficulties and reshape their return to normal life. We conclude that it is our duty to support the work done by such groups, to help developing and or expanding the existing groups in the municipality of Fortaleza in a way that will see them included in the public health services. For that matter it is imperative to call on the local governing authorities to make them recognize and value this type of service so that everyone can get access to it. Those support groups mean a lot for each participating member, bringing up elements that help with social understanding and that is an encouragement for us to use the support groups as a strategy that allows for wellbeing and growth. / O câncer de mama é tido como uma doença cruel e furtífera, papel que desempenhará até o dia em que for esclarecida sua etiologia e cura. Tido como patologia complexa e heterogênea com formas de evolução lenta ou rapidamente progressiva, sua terapêutica é prolongada, dolorosa e, na maioria das vezes, mutilante, razão que deu origem à formação de grupos de apoio a mulheres com esse diagnóstico. Os grupos de apoio que assistem mulheres no pós-operatório de cirurgia por câncer de mama baseiam-se no fato de que a ajuda mútua é uma forma pela qual a mulher mastectomizada pode readquirir a autoconfiança e voltar a exercer todo o seu potencial físico, psicológico e estético. O encontro de mulheres que compartilham da mesma problemática propicia a criação de um espaço, que permite um intercâmbio rico a partir da troca de experiências e ajuda mútua. A presença do outro permite revisar as crenças de cada uma, questionar os segredos, informações incompletas e tabus, adquirir conhecimentos acerca da doença, e esclarecer dúvida sobre pressupostos mantidos no tempo. Neste trabalho, buscamos compreender, na perspectiva da mulher mastectomizada, o significado de conviver em grupos de apoio existentes em Fortaleza. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo no qual os dados foram obtidos com entrevista semi-estruturada com 25 (vinte e cinco) mulheres pertencentes a grupos distintos no período de abril a maio de 2004. Os dados foram organizados pela análise temática de Bardin (1997), sendo identificadas 03 categorias: socialização das experiências, suporte para o enfrentar a situação de vida e compartilhando as incertezas da cura .Os resultados demonstraram que as mulheres julgam de grande valia os grupos de apoio para sua recuperação e reintegração social; que a inserção nos grupos é vista como uma ferramenta que favorece a mulher na superação de suas dificuldades, funcionando como um estímulo no retorno e reconstrução de uma nova história de vida. Concluímos que devemos estimular os trabalhos realizados pelos grupos, favorecer o desenvolvimento e/ou a expansão de grupos desta natureza para o município de Fortaleza, devendo ser inclusos nos serviços de saúde publica, sendo necessário, portanto, despertar a atenção das autoridades governamentais locais no sentido de valorizar e reconhecer esse tipo de serviço para que todos tenham acesso, visto que os grupos são ricos de significados para cada participante, trazendo elementos que contribuem para aprendizagem da convivência humana, o que nos estimula a utilizar o grupo como estratégia que possibilita ser e crescer.
