Previous issue date: 2006-12-19 / Fertilized in the land of an aesthetic attitude - that seems to be in the wrong
hand of the alienated behavior to the mundane and sensible implications -
had come to sprout the leading questions of this inquiry, it has as basic
intention to get to know the construction of the creative process as aesthetic
experience, in its relation with society and culture, from the reference of the
artist Sérvulo Esmeraldo. In this work, a qualitative approach of research was
adopted, more specifically the Person-centered Ethnography, who,
according to Harry Wolcott, consists in a differentiated cultural writing from
the others for its unquiet and discussing way of seeing the natural context
where the phenomenon occurs to be investigated, in which the informer is
taken by personage of a culture. The (auto)ethnographic proposal of Ruth
Behar also contributes with the methodological delineation of this work,
leading the researcher to register personal impressions, disclosing, thus, the
subjective-objective dynamics that goes through the scientific inquiries in the
scope of human sciences. Those instruments had been used: field diary, notes
of field, writing and transcription of ribbons, films, photographs, documentary
research and semi-estructured interview; aiming at to give greater depth to
the points that out standed during the period of comment, totalizing 10
months of immersion in the research field (artist.s atelier) and other contexts
for his chosen, stage this followed by the cultural analysis of the collected
data. In contact with Sérvulo Esmeraldo.s history, the multiplicity of
experiences lived during the long creative trajectory that this icon of the
plastic arts undertakes as artist for more than half century was evident. The
universe of works produced by him - engravings, drawings, paintings and
sculptures - is immensely vast and interesting, becoming a space of richness
for appreciation and, clearly, to inquiry. His passages for other cultures - either
by means of trips or been with artists of the most diverse places around the
world - make Sérvulo Esmeraldo an important and unique personage of this
time, present in the local space through its public works. Thus being, to
research on this artist implies enormous responsibility anchored in the memory
and culture to the state of Ceará.

Neste trabalho, adotou-se uma abordagem qualitativa de pesquisa, mais especificamente a Etnografia Centrada na Pessoa, que, segundo Harry Wolcott, consiste numa escrita cultural diferenciada das demais por seu olhar inquieto e questionador diante do contexto natural onde ocorre o fenômeno a ser investigado, no qual o informante é tomado por personagem de uma cultura. A proposta (auto)etnográfica de Ruth Behar contribui também com o delineamento metodológico deste trabalho, levando a pesquisadora a registrar impressões pessoais, revelando, assim, a dinâmica subjetiva-objetiva que perpassa as investigações científicas no âmbito das ciências humanas. Foram utilizados instrumentos como diário de campo, notas de campo, gravação e transcrição de fitas, filmagens, fotografias, pesquisa documental e entrevista semi-aberta; visando a dar maior profundidade aos pontos que se destacaram durante todo período de observação, que totalizou 10 meses de imersão no campo de pesquisa (o ateliê do artista) e outros contextos por ele escolhidos, etapa esta seguida pela análise cultural dos dados coletados. Entrando em contato com a história de Sérvulo Esmeraldo, ficou evidente a multiplicidade de experiências vividas durante a longa trajetória criativa que este ícone das artes plásticas cearense empreende como artista há mais de meio século. O universo de obras por ele produzidas . gravuras, desenhos, pinturas e esculturas . é imensamente vasto e interessante, tornando-se um espaço de grande riqueza para apreciação e, é claro, para a investigação. Suas passagens por outras culturas . seja por meio de viagens ou convivência com artistas das mais diversas localidades do mundo . fazem de Sérvulo Esmeraldo uma personagem sui generis deste tempo, presente no espaço local através de suas obras públicas. Assim sendo, pesquisar sobre este artista implicou enorme responsabilidade ancorada no registro da memória da cultura cearense.
